The Zagreb theater scene has opened itself towards the world with numerous performances. Notably, in this field, artists are attempting to find the new and avant-garde. The Croatian National Theater is a big stage which at various times has three different Croatian ensemble groups performing on it: opera, ballet and drama. When on tour, it brings the richness of our art to a number of the world's stages. The opera was in full swing in June and July when its repertoire included: Aida, Cavaleria Rusticana, and the Barber of Seville, Ero from the Other World. Also, at the end of May, Lisinski's opera, Porin, was staged. The renowned, Milka Trnina, highly acclaimed both on European and American stages, had her debut at the Croatian National Theatre. She made a name for herself especially performing Wagner's works and she sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Trnina was followed by her pupil, Zinka Kunc-Milanoj. For years, she was the star of the Metropolitan and is considered among the best performers in the world. They were followed by Ruia Pospis-Baldani.
The Zagreb scene has produced many unforgettable opera singers from Vladimir Ruzdak to Krunoslav Cigoj, all of whom conquered the European and world publics. Zagreb's Ballet Company has thrilled audiences around the world. They ended last season with a performance of Petar Iljic Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. The drama ensemble staged "A Game for Two", by Tito Strozzi and "Illusion", by Pierre Comeille. Earlier, they performed Gundulic's "Osman.'
The various Zagreb Theatre, such as the drama theatre, "Gavella', the satirical theater, "Jazavac", the Comedy Theatre, the Histrioni Ensemble, bring to their audiences many interesting performances throughout the year. The residents of Zagreb and their guests have the chance to select what appeals to them the most.
